There is evidence that rug hooking dates back to the late eighteen hundreds in the US. The original hooked rugs were more mat than rug. They were small rectangles much like today’s “welcome mats” that were left in front of doors and fireplaces. They were crafted largely in New England and were used in most homes.

Initially these rugs were simple designs until the late 1800′s when Edward Sands Frost a street peddler came up with patterns and stencils for rug hooking that he sold off his cart. The rugs grew larger and were used as floor coverings for entire rooms and became some what of a fashion statement for the home.Many of these rugs were used to tell a story about a place that the owner had visited, or about their favorite animal. Floral motif designs became very popular as well as simple striped designs.

The burlap backing of the earlier rugs did not hold up well. They tended to rot with use and left many of the rugs unusable. The value of these rugs skyrocketed in the 1970′s in the US when they went from being floor coverings to wall hangings.
