Designing Homespice Rugs is a Hands-On Experience

Our founder, Junior Gupta, is also our chief designer. While he works closely with other talented designers both here in the U.S. and in India, it is the hands-on experience of designing our braided rug patterns where Junior expresses his creativity with colors.  Below he takes us along on a design session at a rural village in India close our factories.

Near Braided Rug Factory

This is an awesome road. It goes between 2 canals.
Love being here, it is so relaxing.

Raw Material for Braided Rugs

The raw materials can be quite beautiful just lying around. I enjoy watching these everytime, because everytime I come to the factory there is some different pile lying around, based on what concepts we are going to work on. It is very inspiring.

Braided Rug Design sitting on floor

I end up finding myself in a whole pile of braids sometimes. Usually by the end of they day. It’s a very interactive experience, I really enjoy the speed of the turnaround (get new colors in within 2 hrs) which is not too fast but also not too slow.

Picking Braids for the braided rugs

I basically have to pick every braid

Picking each detail of a braided rug

And I also pick the fabric that goes into each braid

Another inspirational image for me in the factory. This is the place in the factory where these “bobbins” are kept. These bobbins lie by the design section and there’s a whole lot of these. Somehow the light passing through them, that light & shadow effect, it’s really nice.

Coloring Fabric for rugs

This is one of my favorite parts of the designing process. When I actually have to dye the exact shade I want I feel very artistic. Usually in a factory there’s plenty of shades and raw materials around. This is something I don’t do everyday. I hope I can do more of this.

Braided rug design can be fun :)

I love watching my hands after working on coloring. I dont know, it just looks cool. It makes me feel I’ve really been engaged. I really think I put something personal of mine into the design process.

I hand make every single braid
